Frequently Asked Questions
Since the airport opened its doors 25 years ago, it has become an increasingly popular travel choice for the Metro St. Louis region. This terminal expansion program will provide more room for passengers as well as the opportunity for airlines to provide more service—including international routes.
The terminal expansion program is being funded primarily through federal grant dollars. The Federal Aviation Administration is funding approximately 75% of the funding, with 20% coming from the state, and a 5% local match.
Yes. Two new gates are being added as part of the program, which will allow MidAmerica St. Louis Airport to serve more flights and provide additional hold room space with powered seating.
The terminal expansion program is a multi-year phased project that began in 2019 with the development of the infrastructure to support the terminal addition. Phase 2 started in 2020 and provided the structure for the new part of the terminal. Phase 3, which began in 2022 is expected to be complete in summer 2023, provides renovations to the existing terminal and builds out the interior of the terminal expansion. Phase 4 is anticipated to begin in the spring 2023 and includes the development of a US Customs international arrivals facility.
The new addition will be opened in phases during the spring and summer of 2023. We will provide updates to this web page and on our Facebook page as we get closer to opening.
The terminal expansion program was designed with the customer in mind. It will provide an expanded TSA checkpoint, new meeting rooms, new restrooms, a new nursing room, new pet relief area, technology and accessibility improvements, and furniture, fixture, and finish improvements such as new flooring and powered seating.
As there may be construction efforts that impact travelers, such as a brief period of changes in elevator access, special escort services will be available upon request for elevator access. There will be signage in the terminal providing additional instructions during these periods.
The terminal expansion program was designed to minimize impacts to travelers. Construction has been phased in a way that allows us to operate normally throughout the development.
The phased approach of the terminal expansion program ensures that there will always be at least two gates in service, and there will not be impacts to the number of flights.
The general contractor for the terminal expansion program is Holland Construction Services. Holland is responsible for hiring during construction, and all job opportunities will be available on the firm’s website https://www.hollandcs.com/subcontractors.
