MIDAMERICA AIRPORT RECOGNIZED AS 2018 ILLINOIS PRIMARY AIRPORT OF THE YEAR

IDOT presents the award at the Illinois Aviation Conference

MASCOUTAH, ILL, May 30, 2018 . . . MidAmerica St. Louis Airport has been chosen as the 2018 Primary Airport of the Year by the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Division of Aeronautics. The award for distinction was presented at a special ceremony on Thursday, May 24, during the Illinois Aviation Conference. Award recipients are chosen based on the following criteria:

  • Cooperation and coordination with IDOT’s Division of Aeronautics;
  • The Airport’s safety record;
  • Service provided to the local community by the airport, and
  • General maintenance of the airport facility

In a letter directed to Airport Director Tim Cantwell informing him that MidAmerica Airport has been selected for this special honor, Kenneth W. Martin, Deputy Director of the Division of Aeronautics, noted, “Congratulations to you, and members of your staff, for your efforts in making the MidAmerica Airport one of the outstanding examples of aviation excellence Illinois.”

“Tim and his team at MidAmerica Airport work diligently every day to ensure that every passenger they serve has the best experience possible as they fly in and out of this facility,” noted St. Clair County Chairman Mark Kern.  “Receiving this honor is a salute to all their hard work and a testament to the fact that they continue to deliver an award-winning experience.”

Official receipt of the award came during a week when airport officials were already flying high as May 23 marked the start of daily, non-stop flights to Destin/Fort Walton (VPS), making it the first destination with daily, non-stop service from MidAmerica. The ramp up in the service on that route is the latest expansion by Allegiant at MidAmerica Airport, where it now offers service to a total of nine amazing destinations. The eight others with direct flights departing regularly include: Fort Lauderdale, FL (FLL); Fort Myers/Punta Gorda, FL (PGD); Jacksonville, FL (JAX); Las Vegas, NV (LAS); Myrtle Beach, SC (MYR); Orlando/Sanford, FL (SFB); and Tampa/St. Pete, FL (PIE) and Phoenix / Mesa, AZ (AZA).

“My staff and I are extremely proud to be selected as airport of the year and excited that the passengers we serve now have one more reason to feel good about flying MidAmerica,” said Airport Director Tim Cantwell. “When you factor in that we continue to offer a convenient, hassle-free experience with handy parking right in front of the terminal, short lines for check-in and security, and easy access to the departure gates, we expect our winning streak to continue.”
